This stretch of the Wine Route through the Costa degli Etruschi produces excellent wines known all over the world, including the versatile, increasingly- appreciated Val di Cornia DOC fine wines.

Aglorious route, made even more enjoyable by visits to cellars and farms, winds through fertile countryside where farms offer comfortable holiday accommodation. Overlooking the ancient squares and in the streets that run down to the sea are restaurants and trattorias in Piombino offering delicious cuisine where the main ingredient is fish.

Taste is also the thread running through festivals such as "August with gusto" which has become a cult wine and food event. Fish dishes from the Piombino coast are known for their quality ingredients and traditional recipes. Fish are caught daily along the coast and cooked in original, tasty ways.

Seafood and shellfish, white fish and oily fish, stewed octopus, squid in spicy olive oil, stockfish and potatoes, and "cacciucco" (the local fish stew) are only some of the dishes served in the area's numerous restaurants and wine bars which often have a sea view.

If fish is king, food from the countryside is just as tasty, offering soups, game and vegetables such as the characteristic purple artichoke, which merits its own Sagra (fest) at Riotorto. Beef from locally-raised Chianina cattle is highly prized and usually served grilled.
