The sea flows through the
Medicean Canals to reach
right into the historic
quarters of the city, giving
Livorno the unique charm
of a piece of Tuscany
reaching into the
Mediterranean.
Its history,
traditions and culture, the
flaming sunsets and
limpid, scented air, water
sports and gastronomic
traditions all speak of
Livorno's link with the sea.
Nowadays a recipient of
the European Union's
Blue Flag, Europe's first
bathing establishments
were opened here in the
nineteenth century, as
was the prestigious Naval
Academy, where Italian
naval officers have been
trained for over a century.
All are situated along the
splendid tree-lined
seafront walk often
depicted by painters of
the Macchiaioli school.
A famous scenic coastal
road runs from Livorno to
Quercianella along the
Romito, passing high cliffs
and limpid waters, a
paradise for fishermen
and scuba divers
