may in campiglia
campiglia marittima
This enchanting mediaeval village, characterised by a long ancient history, celebrates May the whole month through in a series of atmospheric events which end in the Historical Day, traditionally held on the first Sunday after May 15. This initiative is inspired by the "Calendimaggio", a celebration of spring and nature awakening, and the days when the Captain of Justice would arrive from Florence.
Scenes of every day life spring up in the village from early in the morning: people in old costumes reproduce ancient forgotten crafts and artisan works.
The historical parade, musicians, sopranos, tenors, games of strolling players, acrobats, competitions of archery and the Palio are great entertainment for the rest of the day.
At any time in May you can trek deep in the countryside, go on trips to the Mineral Park of S. Silvestro, attend art exhibitions, dances, concerts and theatrical performances set not only in the beautifully decorated theatre Teatro dei Concordi, but also in the squares and along the stone-paved lanes.
