The coastal tower is San
Vincenzo's oldest building,
built by the Pisans in 1307.
Part of the town and
situated on the shore to
the north of the marina, for
centuries it was a lookout
to defend the coast attack
by Saracen pirates, as well
as a garrison and a
customs post.
A fierce battle was fought
near the tower between
Pisa and Florence on 17
August 1505, which ended
with confirmation of
Florence's domination over
the land in this area.
The San Vincenzo Tower,
now completely
practicable and with no
architectural barriers, is
the site of the new Council
Meeting Chamber, the
Tourist Information Office
and multimedia exhibition
spaces.
