The Montioni Natural Park
appears as an island of
green hills extending over
7,000 hectares at the center
of a vast area covered by
Mediterranean scrub, ilex
and Turkey oak woods, and
contains important
archaeological finds.
The Park is a fascinating
natural heritage inhabited
by numerous species of
birds and other fauna
including boar, roe and
fallow deer, and porcupine.
Silence reigns here, and
numerous trails wait to be
explored on foot, by bicycle
or on horseback in this
splendid green setting of
Mediterranean scrub, dense
oak woods, mines and
historic reminders.
Deep inside the Park are
the remains of alum
quarries which where part
of the Mining Village
created by Elisa Bonaparte
Baciocchi, Napoleone's
sister.
Admittance to the Park
is free, and there is a lodge,
a hostel and equipped
picnic areas.
Guided tours can also be
booked.
